Fordham erases double-digit deficit to down Fairfield in exhibition

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — For the better part of the first half, Fairfield looked the part of a preseason favorite. The Stags built a 12-point lead with four minutes remaining before halftime against Fordham, showing the depth and toughness that could define their season. The final 20 minutes, however, told a different story, as the Rams pulled away for a 79-62 exhibition victory at Leo D. Mahoney Arena.

With preseason Metro Conference Player of the Year Declan Wucherpfennig sidelined with an undisclosed day-to-day injury, Fairfield needed its backcourt to shoulder a greater offensive burden. Instead, Tony Williams and Eric Mejia combined to shoot just 2-for-20 from the field as the Stags struggled to maintain their first-half momentum. Fordham recovered from its early deficit to take a 34-32 halftime lead before pulling away after the break.

There were still encouraging signs for Fairfield, as the starting frontcourt of a healthy Peyton Smith and Mercyhurst transfer Qadir Martin helped set the tone physically. Missing all of last season with an injury, Smith has changed his body, looking leaner, quicker and more active on both ends of the floor. He finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and a team-best plus-4 efficiency, providing an encouraging early look at what Fairfield could gain from his return.

Martin added nine points and eight rebounds, giving the Stags another physical presence inside. The Staten Island native showed the potential to make an impact beyond the box score as he settles into his new role with Fairfield. Sophomore wing Halon Rawlins was another bright spot, finishing with 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. He provided an efficient scoring option as Fairfield’s primary perimeter threats struggled to find their rhythm.

With Jah Hatchett also unavailable, freshman guard Cole Edelen showed an ability to handle point guard responsibilities while playing alongside Williams. He finished 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and recorded three steals and two assists, offering a glimpse of the versatility he could bring to the Stags’ backcourt.

Fairfield’s depth and lineup flexibility were evident early, but Saturday’s second half underscored the importance of consistent perimeter production and rebounding. The Rams finished with a commanding 51-29 advantage on the glass, including 15 offensive rebounds that helped produce a 10-3 edge in second-chance points.

For a team with preseason expectations, the exhibition offered both an encouraging opening stretch and several areas to address before the regular season begins. Wucherpfennig’s injury does not look serious, but his availability will be worth monitoring as the Stags prepare for the start of the season.
